Hagia Sophia Location
Hagia Sophia is located in Istanbul's historic Sultanahmet district on the European side of the city. It stands between the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace, with the Basilica Cistern, Hippodrome, and Gülhane Park all within a short walking distance. Thanks to its central location, Hagia Sophia is easily reached by public transportation, including the T1 tram, ferries, metro connections, and taxis.

Where Is the Hagia Sophia Entrance?
Hagia Sophia has two main entrances, but not all of them are open to every visitor. As the monument functions as both an active mosque and a major tourist attraction, separate entrances are used for worshippers and tourists.
Visitors sightseeing inside Hagia Sophia enter through the designated visitor entrance on the northeastern side of the building, facing the Bosphorus and close to the entrance of Topkapı Palace.
Meanwhile, the entrance facing Sultanahmet Square is reserved for worshippers attending prayers. Choosing the correct entrance before you arrive will help you avoid unnecessary queues and confusion.
Hagia Sophia Entrance for Tourists
To preserve Hagia Sophia's role as an active mosque while accommodating millions of visitors each year, separate entrances are now used for tourists and worshippers. Tourists enter through the designated visitor entrance on the northeastern side of the building, where they pass through security and ticket control before following a clearly marked route.
This visitor route leads to the Upper Gallery Visiting Area, allowing visitors to admire Hagia Sophia's Byzantine architecture, famous mosaics, and sweeping interior views. The ground-floor prayer hall is reserved for worshippers and is not accessible as part of the standard tourist visit.

Different Hagia Sophia Entrances
Today, Hagia Sophia has two separate entrances: one for visitors exploring the monument and another for worshippers attending daily prayers. Beyond these modern access points, the building also preserves historic gateways from its Byzantine past, the most famous of which is the Imperial Gate.
Visitor Entrance
The visitor entrance is located on the northeastern side of the building and provides access to the official sightseeing route. After passing through security and ticket validation, visitors enter the Upper Gallery Visiting Area and follow the designated one-way route before exiting at the end of their visit.
Worshippers' Entrance
The Hagia Sophia entrance facing Sultanahmet Square is reserved exclusively for worshippers attending daily prayers. Visitors sightseeing inside the monument cannot use this entrance and should instead follow the clearly marked visitor entrance, where security screening and ticket checks are completed before entry.
The Historic Imperial Gate
The Historic Imperial Gate is Hagia Sophia's largest and most elaborate Byzantine doorway. Reserved exclusively for emperors during important religious ceremonies, it is no longer used as a public entrance. Today, visitors can admire the gate and the famous Emperor Leo VI Mosaic displayed directly above it.
Hagia Sophia Entrance Fee
The Hagia Sophia entrance fee applies to visitors entering the monument through the designated sightseeing entrance. An admission ticket is required to access the Upper Gallery Visiting Area, where visitors can admire Hagia Sophia's Byzantine architecture, historic mosaics, and panoramic interior views.
Visitors attending prayer do not pay an entrance fee, as they use the separate entrance reserved for worshippers rather than the tourist visitor route.
